Nigeria TV Info Supporters Express Disappointment Over Fubara’s Withdrawal in Rivers
Supporters of Siminalayi Fubara have expressed disappointment following his withdrawal from the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primaries in Rivers State, a move that has continued to generate political tension and mixed reactions across the state.
Fubara announced his decision after what he described as “deep reflection and extensive consultations,” stating that peace, unity, and stability in Rivers State should take precedence over personal ambition. He also pledged support for whoever emerges as the APC candidate.
However, many of his loyalists and supporters have reacted angrily, saying they feel abandoned after investing time, resources, and political energy into his ambition. Viral videos circulating online showed emotional supporters lamenting the development and questioning why the governor encouraged them to stand firmly behind him despite the growing political pressure allegedly linked to the influence of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) also criticized Fubara’s withdrawal, describing it as a surrender to political intimidation and a sign of increasing godfatherism in Rivers politics. The group argued that the governor should have remained in the race and allowed the democratic process to decide the outcome.
Meanwhile, supporters of Wike celebrated the withdrawal, describing it as proof of the former Rivers governor’s enduring political dominance in the state. Political observers believe the decision could significantly reshape the political landscape ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Rivers State.
Despite the criticism, Fubara insisted that his withdrawal was not an act of fear or weakness but a sacrifice made in the interest of maintaining peace and avoiding further division within the state.
