LP, NDC, ADC, PDP Factions Hold Parallel Primaries Ahead of Key Elections
Fresh political tensions have emerged across several opposition parties in Nigeria as factions within the Labour Party (LP), National Democratic Coalition (NDC), African Democratic Congress (ADC), and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) conducted parallel primaries in preparation for upcoming elections.
The competing exercises, held in different locations by rival party leaders, exposed deep divisions over leadership control, delegate lists, and candidate selection processes. Party stakeholders accused one another of violating constitutions, manipulating delegates, and attempting to hijack party structures for personal political interests.
In the Labour Party, rival camps each declared their own candidates and insisted their primaries were legitimate. Similar disputes were recorded within the PDP, where parallel congresses and primaries intensified existing internal crises in several states. Observers fear the growing disagreements could weaken the parties ahead of future electoral contests.
The ADC and NDC factions also witnessed confusion as different groups produced separate lists of candidates and executives. Supporters from opposing camps exchanged accusations over transparency and legality, while some members called for intervention by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the courts.
Political analysts say the wave of parallel primaries reflects the ongoing struggle for influence within Nigeriaâs opposition politics. They warned that unresolved disputes may lead to prolonged legal battles, defections, and possible disqualification of candidates if party leadership crises continue.
Meanwhile, INEC urged political parties to follow due process and maintain internal democracy, stressing that only properly conducted primaries recognized under electoral laws would be accepted.
