FG’s electricity subsidy for hospitals, schools elusive one year after

Nigeria TV Info reports that nearly a year after Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu promised in August 2024 to subsidise electricity for hospitals and educational institutions, there has been no further action or official communication on the matter. Industry sources suggest that the Federal Government may not be actively considering any subsidy for these critical institutions.

Consumer advocacy groups have criticised the government’s silence, accusing Adelabu of making an unapproved statement without clearance from the Federal Executive Council. His initial promise came at a time when hospitals and universities were grappling with a steep hike in electricity tariffs due to their migration to Band A feeders, which are no longer subsidised.

Consequently, electricity bills for some tertiary hospitals reportedly tripled—from under N100 million to as much as N300 million monthly—straining their already tight budgets. Despite the financial burden, no concrete relief has been provided.

Adelabu, who recently announced his bid for the Ogun State governorship, had assured in 2024 that subsidies would be extended to these institutions regardless of their tariff classification. As of now, the promise remains unfulfilled.
