ADC Crisis: INEC Should Have Recognised Nafiu Bala, Says Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has weighed in on the ongoing leadership crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), stating that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should have officially recognised Nafiu Bala as the party’s legitimate leader.

Wike made this assertion while addressing journalists in Abuja, stressing that adherence to due process and internal party democracy is crucial for Nigeria’s political stability. According to him, available records and party processes indicate that Nafiu Bala emerged through a legitimate structure, and therefore deserved formal recognition by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The ADC has been embroiled in a prolonged leadership tussle, with multiple factions laying claim to the party’s national leadership. This internal conflict has raised concerns among political observers about the party’s cohesion ahead of future elections.

Wike criticized INEC’s handling of the situation, arguing that inconsistencies in recognizing party leadership could undermine democratic principles. He warned that failure to properly address such disputes might set a dangerous precedent for other political parties facing internal disagreements.

The minister further urged INEC to remain neutral and strictly guided by constitutional provisions and party guidelines when making decisions regarding leadership disputes. He emphasized that transparency and fairness are essential to maintaining public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system.

As the crisis continues, stakeholders within the ADC have called for reconciliation efforts to prevent further fragmentation. Political analysts note that how INEC resolves the matter could have broader implications for party politics and electoral credibility in Nigeria.
