Akpabio Declares Three Nigerian Senate Seats Vacant After Lawmakers’ Deaths, Orders By‑Elections

Abuja, March 31, 2026 — The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has formally declared three seats in the 10th National Assembly’s Senate vacant following the deaths of three serving senators. Akpabio made the announcement during plenary on Tuesday, noting that the vacancies were created by “tragic losses” that have befallen the upper chamber.

Addressing his colleagues, Akpabio said the declaration was made in strict accordance with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). He specifically listed the seats of Enugu North, Nasarawa North, and Rivers South‑East Senatorial Districts as vacant, following the passing of Senators Okechukuwu Ezea, Godiya Akwashiki, and Barinada Mpigi, respectively.

In his statement, the Senate President directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct by‑elections within the time frame stipulated by law — roughly 30 days from the date of declaration — to ensure that the affected constituencies are promptly represented in the Senate.

Akpabio also expressed condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the deceased lawmakers, acknowledging their contributions to legislative work and national development. The development sets in motion mid‑term electoral contests in the affected districts, with major political parties expected to mobilize for fresh polls.
