Tinubu Blasts Opposition Over ‘Twisting’ of Electoral Act

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has criticised opposition parties for allegedly misrepresenting provisions of Nigeria’s Electoral Act for political advantage, warning against what he described as deliberate misinformation aimed at misleading the public.

Speaking during a recent political gathering, the president accused opposition figures of distorting the intent and content of the law to score cheap political points. He stressed that such actions could undermine public trust in the electoral system and democratic institutions.

Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to credible elections, transparency, and the rule of law, noting that the Electoral Act was designed to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy rather than weaken it. He maintained that the government would continue to support the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in conducting free, fair, and transparent elections.

The president also cautioned political actors against spreading false narratives, urging them instead to engage constructively in strengthening democratic processes. According to him, democracy thrives on healthy competition, but such competition must be rooted in truth and respect for the law.

His remarks come amid ongoing debates over amendments to the Electoral Act, with opposition parties raising concerns about certain provisions, particularly around election transparency and result transmission.

Despite the criticism, Tinubu insisted that reforms introduced under his administration are aimed at improving electoral efficiency and credibility, not undermining it. He called on Nigerians to remain vigilant and avoid being swayed by politically motivated misinformation.
