2027 Strategy: Makinde Meets Kwankwaso as PDP Reconciliation Falters

As Nigeria’s 2027 general election battle lines sharpen, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde met with former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso and other opposition figures, underscoring deepening strains within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Makinde and Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed convened with Senator Seriake Dickson before traveling to Kano for the 10th annual Dandalin Kwankwasiyya, where they joined Kwankwaso and Peter Obi in political consultations that insiders suggest extend beyond Eid‑el‑Fitr celebrations.

The high‑profile engagement comes amid stalled reconciliation between the governors’ faction and the Nyesom Wike‑aligned bloc of the PDP, whose leadership dispute has split the party into rival camps and triggered legal battles over control of party structures.

The crux of the rift is disagreement over party unity and strategy ahead of 2027, with Makinde openly criticising moves to align with Wike’s faction, alleging they amount to tacit support for President Bola Tinubu.

For its part, Wike’s group accuses the governors’ camp of undermining the PDP convention scheduled for late March, while the Turaki‑led faction defends its commitment to reconciliation.

As both sides exchange public recriminations, the meeting with Kwankwaso — who now leads the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) — and discussions with other opposition figures signal potential re‑alignment among opposition forces if PDP unity remains elusive.
