ADC Crisis Deepens as Faction Urges INEC to Remove Mark, Aregbesola

The internal crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has intensified, as a rival faction formally petitioned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withdraw recognition of David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola as the party’s national chairman and secretary.

The faction, reportedly led by Nafiu Bala, accused the current leadership of illegitimacy and alleged that due process was not followed in their emergence. In a formal communication to INEC, the group called for immediate intervention, arguing that continued recognition of the duo undermines internal democracy within the party.

This development follows an earlier legal battle at the Federal High Court, where an ex parte motion seeking the removal of Mark and Aregbesola was declined. The court instead directed all parties to present their arguments, signaling that the dispute would be resolved through due judicial process.

Despite INEC’s prior stance recognizing Mark and Aregbesola as legitimate leaders, dissenting voices within the ADC have continued to challenge their authority, leading to factional divisions and parallel claims to leadership.

Political analysts warn that the lingering crisis could weaken the ADC’s position as a viable opposition platform ahead of the 2027 general elections. The party, which has recently attracted coalition interest, now faces the risk of fragmentation if reconciliation efforts fail.

Observers note that unless a political or legal resolution is reached promptly, the leadership tussle may affect party cohesion, candidate selection processes, and overall electoral readiness.
