FG Activates Evacuation Plan as Middle East Crisis Worsens

The Federal Government of Nigeria has activated an emergency evacuation plan to rescue Nigerians stranded in the Middle East following escalating conflict across the region.

The move comes amid rising hostilities involving Iran, the United States, and Israel, which have triggered missile and drone attacks across several Gulf countries, heightening fears for the safety of foreign nationals, including Nigerians.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, authorities are currently finalising administrative procedures and releasing funds to begin the evacuation process. Officials say priority will be given to Nigerians in high-risk areas such as Iran and Israel, where security conditions remain volatile and evacuation logistics are more complex.

The government revealed that evacuating citizens from Iran poses significant challenges, including transporting stranded students from different cities to safer exit points like the Armenian border. Diplomatic efforts are ongoing to secure safe passage and meet entry requirements for evacuees.

Meanwhile, Nigerians stranded in transit locations such as Qatar are gradually returning home as international flights resume in phases. Airlines, including Qatar Airways, have restarted limited operations, helping to ease the situation for affected travelers.

However, the crisis has severely disrupted global aviation, with several airlines suspending or rerouting flights due to safety concerns. Dubai, a key international travel hub for Nigerians, has experienced repeated flight suspensions, leaving many passengers stranded and creating uncertainty around travel plans.

The Federal Government also noted that it is exploring multiple evacuation options, including the possible deployment of Nigerian Air Force aircraft, although ongoing hostilities and airspace restrictions remain major obstacles.

Authorities have reassured citizens that efforts are ongoing to ensure their safe return, while urging Nigerians in affected countries to remain calm, stay alert, and maintain contact with Nigerian embassies for updates and assistance.
