Israeli Ambassador Accuses Iran of Spreading Terrorism in Nigeria, Backing Extremist Groups
The Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria, Michael Freeman, has warned that Iran is actively spreading terrorism in Nigeria and supporting extremist groups, raising concerns about security and stability across West Africa.
Speaking during an interview with Arise News on Friday, Freeman alleged that the Iranian government has been backing the Islamic Movement of Nigeria and working to expand its influence in the region.
According to the ambassador, Iranâs involvement in global terror activities has been widely documented, and its operations now extend beyond the Middle East into several African countries, including Nigeria.
âWe know that there are certain movements, for example, the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, which is sponsored and backed by the Iranian regime,â Freeman said. âThis is not just speculation. We have seen it documented by the Iranian leadership itself.â
Freeman also referenced statements attributed to Ali Khamenei, Iranâs Supreme Leader, who has previously expressed support for groups aligned with Tehranâs ideological position.
The ambassador further warned that Iranâs activities are not limited to Nigeria alone but extend across West Africa, where he claimed the country is attempting to influence political and security dynamics.
Freeman linked the issue to wider geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, arguing that Iranâs nuclear programme, ballistic missile development, and long-standing hostility toward Israel have contributed to escalating conflicts in the region.
He described Israelâs actions against Iranâs growing military capabilities as a necessary measure for national defence, adding that Tehranâs ambitions pose a serious threat not only to Israel but also to global security.
The remarks come amid heightened international tensions involving Iran and its regional allies, with analysts warning that geopolitical rivalries could have wider implications for countries far beyond the Middle East, including parts of Africa.
