Stranded: Nigerian Air Travellers Stuck as US, Israel–Iran Conflict Disrupts Flights

Hundreds of Nigerian air travellers have been left stranded at airports across the Middle East and beyond following widespread flight disruptions triggered by escalating military tensions between the United States, Israel, and Iran.

The crisis began after joint strikes by the United States and Israel targeted strategic sites in Iran, prompting retaliatory missile attacks and heightened security concerns across the region. The escalation forced several countries to shut down or restrict their airspace, causing a ripple effect across global aviation routes.

As a result, airlines operating between Nigeria and major Middle Eastern hubs such as Dubai, Doha, and Abu Dhabi have cancelled or delayed numerous flights. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) confirmed that flights operated by major carriers, including Emirates and Qatar Airways, have been disrupted due to the ongoing closures of key air corridors in the Middle East.

Many Nigerian passengers travelling to Europe, Asia, and North America rely on transit routes through Gulf hubs. With airports and airspaces in countries including Iran, Iraq, Israel, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates temporarily closed or restricted, thousands of passengers worldwide have been stranded at airports waiting for updates from airlines.

Industry reports indicate that the shutdown of one of the world’s busiest aviation corridors has resulted in more than 1,800 flight cancellations and tens of thousands of delays globally. Major international airlines have either suspended operations or rerouted flights to avoid the conflict zone, significantly increasing travel times and operational costs.

The disruption has created uncertainty for Nigerian travellers who are either stuck in transit countries or unable to depart from Nigerian airports. Travel agencies have reported a surge in enquiries from affected passengers seeking rebooking options or refunds as airlines struggle to reorganize schedules.

Authorities have advised passengers to remain in contact with their airlines for updates and to avoid heading to airports without confirming the status of their flights. Aviation experts warn that the disruption could persist until tensions ease and regional airspace is reopened.

Meanwhile, global aviation regulators continue to monitor the evolving security situation, with safety remaining the top priority for airlines and passengers alike.
