FCT Council Polls: INEC Denies Result Manipulation at Polling Unit, Cites Clerical Error

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed allegations of result manipulation in the ongoing Area Council elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), describing the incident at a polling unit in Abuja as a mere clerical error.

In a statement issued by the FCT Resident Electoral Commissioner, the commission clarified that the discrepancy observed on the result sheet was due to a manual entry mistake made during collation. According to INEC, the error was immediately identified and corrected in the presence of party agents and election observers.

The commission stressed that the integrity of the electoral process remains intact, assuring voters and political stakeholders that no figures were altered to favour any candidate or political party. It further explained that the original ballot counts from the polling unit were consistent with the corrected results uploaded to the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV).

INEC urged members of the public to disregard what it described as “misleading narratives” circulating on social media, noting that the commission remains committed to transparency, accountability, and credible elections.

Security officials were reportedly deployed to maintain calm at the affected polling unit, while party representatives present during the collation process confirmed that the issue was resolved amicably.

The FCT council polls have largely recorded peaceful conduct across area councils, with voter turnout described as moderate in several districts.
