INEC: Vote Buying Won’t Be Tolerated in FCT Poll, Asks EFCC, ICPC to Make Arrest
The Independent National Electoral Commission has warned that vote buying and other electoral offences will not be tolerated during the forthcoming Federal Capital Territory council elections. The commission said it has strengthened monitoring systems and deployed personnel to ensure strict compliance with electoral laws.
Speaking ahead of the polls in Abuja, INEC Chairman, stressed that credible elections depend on transparency, accountability, and enforcement of the law. He noted that vote trading undermines democratic principles and distorts the will of the electorate.
The commission has formally called on anti-corruption agencies to arrest and prosecute anyone caught inducing voters with cash, gifts, or other incentives. It said the collaboration is part of a broader strategy to deter electoral malpractice and ensure free and fair polls.
INEC also urged voters to reject financial inducements and report suspicious activities at polling units. According to the commission, civic responsibility and public vigilance are essential to strengthening democracy in Nigeria.
Security agencies have been directed to maintain order throughout the electoral process, while election observers and civil society groups are expected to support monitoring efforts. INEC reaffirmed its commitment to credible elections and warned that offenders will face the full weight of the law.
