Electoral Act: Akpabio Summons Emergency Sitting as Notable Nigerians Kick, NLC Warns
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has convened an emergency sitting of the National Assembly following mounting controversy over proposed amendments to the Electoral Act. The move comes amid growing public criticism, with notable Nigerians and civil society groups warning that last-minute changes could undermine electoral credibility ahead of future polls.
Sources at the National Assembly said the emergency session is aimed at fast-tracking deliberations on contentious clauses, including timelines for primaries, the role of technology in elections, and powers of the electoral umpire. Proponents argue the amendments are necessary to close loopholes and strengthen the legal framework, while critics insist the process lacks transparency and adequate stakeholder consultation.
Prominent political figures, lawyers and activists have kicked against the timing, describing it as suspicious and potentially destabilising. They warn that hurried amendments could trigger legal disputes and erode public trust in the electoral process.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) also issued a stern warning, urging lawmakers to suspend any rushed action and engage widely with stakeholders. The labour centre cautioned that actions perceived as undermining democracy could provoke nationwide resistance, insisting that electoral reforms must reflect the will of the people and international best practices.
As the emergency sitting convenes, all eyes are on the Senate to see whether lawmakers will heed the calls for caution or push ahead with the proposed changes.
