Tinubu Proposes Expansion of Court of Appeal, Seeks 110 Justices, Introduces Virtual Hearings
President Bola Tinubu has sent a bill to the National Assembly proposing an amendment to the Court of Appeal Act to increase the number of justices from 70 to 110. The proposal, part of a broader judicial reform, also includes recognition of virtual hearings for Court of Appeal cases and the establishment of an Alternative Dispute Resolution Centre (ADRC) to settle suitable matters outside traditional court proceedings.
The government says the expansion aims to strengthen the judiciary, improve efficiency, and address growing case backlogs. The bill also proposes increasing the number of judges on the Federal High Court from 70 to 90. The Senate has received the bill and referred it to the Committee on Rules and Business for review before debate and voting. Legal experts have noted that if passed, the reforms could modernize the appellate system and enhance access to justice across Nigeria.
