KWASU Don Raises Alarm Over Rising Killings, Kidnappings in Kwara
Ilorin â The Coordinating Head, Department of Social Justice and Security Studies, Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, Dr. Waliyu Oladotun Akanni, has raised concern over worsening insecurity in Kwara State, revealing that terrorists allegedly killed about 150 civilians and kidnapped no fewer than 300 persons between January and December 2025.
Dr. Akanni made the disclosure in Ilorin while delivering a public lecture titled âPreserving the State of Harmony: Reclaiming the Kwara Identity in the Era of Prevalent Insecurity in Nigeria.â
The lecture was jointly organised by the MaâAssalam Foundation and Mustapha Akanbi Foundation (MAF).
He described the trend as a serious threat to the long-standing peaceful reputation of the state, warning that the scale of violence signals a deepening security crisis.
According to him, âThe ugly development has underscored a systemic security collapse and a critical security challenge that persisted throughout the year.â
The university don called on the Kwara State Government and security agencies to urgently adopt grassroots-driven approaches to contain the spread of criminal networks across rural and border communities.
As part of practical solutions, he advocated the establishment of border community peace committees to enhance intelligence gathering, strengthen community policing, and build trust between residents and security operatives.
Dr. Akanni further warned that insecurity has begun to cripple socio-economic activities across affected areas.
He noted that, âThe multiplier effects of armed criminality in Kwara State extend far beyond immediate violence, manifesting in the systematic retreat of state and educational institutions and the collapse of local commerce.â
He stressed that if decisive and coordinated measures are not taken, the state risks losing its identity as one of Nigeriaâs most peaceful regions.
