Chimamanda Adichie’s Family Issues Hospital Legal Notice Over Son’s Death, Lagos Begins Probe

LAGOS, Nigeria — Renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her partner, Dr. Ivara Esege, have formally served a legal notice on Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital, Lagos, alleging medical negligence in the death of their 21-month-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi Adichie-Esege.

The legal notice, dated January 10, 2026, accuses the hospital, its anaesthesiologist and attending medical staff of breaching their duty of care to the toddler, who died in the early hours of January 7 after being sedated with propofol during a series of preparatory diagnostic procedures ahead of a planned medical evacuation to the United States.

According to the family’s lawyers, the child developed complications during internal transfers within the facility, citing inadequate monitoring, improper sedation dosing, lack of supplemental oxygen, and insufficient medical personnel attending the toddler. The notice also alleges failures in informed consent and availability of resuscitation equipment.

The parents have demanded certified copies of all medical records within seven days and instructed the hospital to preserve all evidence — including CCTV footage, electronic monitoring data and drug logs — warning that destruction or alteration could lead to legal action.

Lagos State Government Orders Probe

In response to public outcry and the legal notice, the Lagos State Government, under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has directed the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) to conduct a comprehensive, independent investigation into the circumstances of Nkanu’s death, reviewing compliance with clinical protocols and patient-safety standards.

Authorities confirmed that the anaesthesiologist involved has been suspended by the hospital management pending further findings. The probe will involve regulatory bodies, with results to be made public.

Hospital Response & Broader Reaction

Euracare has denied wrongdoing, stating the child was critically ill upon referral and care met accepted medical standards. The case has reignited national debate over medical errors and healthcare quality in Nigeria, drawing calls for systemic reforms from health professionals and civil society.
