Nigerian Author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie ‘Devastated’ by Death of Young Son
Celebrated Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is mourning the heartbreaking loss of her toddler son, Nkanu Nnamdi, who died on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, after a brief illness at 21 months old, her family confirmed in a statement released Thursday.
In an official message issued by her communications team and signed by Omawumi Ogbe of GLG Communications, the family described the loss as “profound” and said they were devastated by the tragedy. They have appealed to the public and media to respect their privacy as they mourn in private, and asked for grace and prayers during this painfully difficult time.
Adichie and her husband, Dr. Ivara Esege, welcomed the twins via surrogacy in 2024. Nkanu was one of the twin boys the couple had embraced with great joy after years of privacy about their family life.
The news has drawn an outpouring of sympathy from across Nigeria and around the world. Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu expressed deep condolences, describing the loss of a child as “one of the most devastating” experiences for a parent and offering his thoughts and prayers to the family.
Fans, fellow writers, public figures, and admirers of Adichie’s work — including acclaimed novels such as Half of a Yellow Sun and Americanah, as well as influential essays like We Should All Be Feminists — have also extended messages of support. The family has indicated no further statements will be issued at this time.
