Rivers Assembly Serves Impeachment Notice on Fubara, Deputy
The Rivers State House of Assembly has issued a formal notice of impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu. The notice, reportedly signed by members of the Assembly, accuses the governor and his deputy of alleged gross misconduct in the discharge of their duties.
According to the notice, the lawmakers cited constitutional provisions empowering the Assembly to commence impeachment proceedings, giving the affected officials a stipulated period to respond to the allegations. The development is the latest escalation in the prolonged political crisis in Rivers State, marked by a rift between the governor and a faction of the Assembly.
Sources at the Assembly say the impeachment move followed a plenary session where lawmakers resolved to transmit the notice to both the governor and his deputy. Supporters of Governor Fubara have, however, described the action as politically motivated, insisting that due process must be strictly followed.
The situation has heightened political tension in the state, with residents and stakeholders closely watching how the crisis will unfold in the coming days, as calls grow for dialogue and adherence to constitutional procedures.
