2027: Kwankwaso Summons Kano Speaker Over Governor’s Defection to APC

In a dramatic political development, Dr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), yesterday summoned the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Jibril Ismail Falgore, and other key party figures to his residence in Kano as tensions mount over Kano Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s reported plan to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The emergency meeting, which lasted several hours, was convened after Kwankwaso abruptly cancelled a planned overseas trip in light of the escalating situation. Several federal lawmakers elected on the NNPP platform also attended the closed-door session.

Reports indicate that some party members, including those close to Governor Yusuf, were pushing both Kwankwaso and the Speaker to embrace the governor’s move to the APC, arguing it could bring development and stronger ties with the federal government.

However, NNPP leadership has firmly rejected any endorsement of the governor’s defection, describing such a move as a “gross betrayal” of the party’s trust and the electorate’s mandate. Party chairman Hashim Dungurawa stressed that neither Kwankwaso nor the NNPP structure support.

Party chairman Hashim Dungurawa stressed that neither Kwankwaso nor the NNPP structure supports the governor’s alignment with the APC.

The crisis deepens long-standing tensions within the Kwankwasiyya movement, with divisions emerging between loyalists advocating party unity and others seemingly ready to realign politically ahead of the 2027 general elections.

What’s Next?

Political analysts predict more negotiations and possible legal or legislative actions as the NNPP seeks to maintain cohesion and resist defections that could weaken its influence in Kano and nationally.
