Power supply restored after national grid collapse – NISO
Nigeria’s electricity supply has gradually returned following a nationwide outage triggered by a sudden collapse of the national grid, according to the National Independent System Operator (NISO).
The disturbance, which occurred after reported instability on key transmission lines, plunged several states into darkness and disrupted economic activities.
NISO said engineers immediately activated restoration protocols, isolating affected circuits and ramping up generation in phases to stabilize frequency and voltage across the network. Power plants that had been forced offline were re-synchronized, while transmission substations were sequentially brought back to service to prevent further trips.
The agency assured that a technical investigation is underway to determine the root cause, including whether load imbalances, equipment failure, or protection system faults contributed to the collapse. It pledged to publish findings and implement corrective measures with the Transmission Company of Nigeria and generation firms.
Consumers across major cities reported gradual improvement in supply late Monday, though NISO warned that some areas may still experience load management while full normalcy is restored.
The operator reiterated its commitment to modernizing grid infrastructure, improving real-time monitoring, and strengthening contingency plans to reduce the frequency and impact of future system disturbances.
