Gazette Furore: We Didn’t Alter Tax Laws — FG
The Federal Government has dismissed allegations that recently gazetted tax laws were secretly altered, insisting that no changes were made outside constitutional procedures. In a statement addressing the growing controversy, the government said the versions signed by the President and transmitted for gazetting were exactly the same as those passed by the National Assembly.
Officials explained that gazetting is a routine administrative process meant to formally publish existing laws, not to amend them. The FG stressed that any modification to tax legislation can only occur through legislative debate, approval by lawmakers, and presidential assent, warning that claims of manipulation were misleading and capable of causing unnecessary public anxiety.
The controversy had sparked reactions from opposition figures, civil society groups, and tax experts, who demanded clarity on perceived discrepancies. In response, the government reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and rule of law, urging the public to rely on verified official documents rather than speculation.
