Alleged Alterations: Presidency Kicks as Atiku, Obi Fight Tax Laws
The Presidency has pushed back strongly against allegations of alterations in Nigeriaâs tax reform bills, following sharp criticisms from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Partyâs 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi. Both opposition figures raised concerns over the process and substance of the proposed tax laws, warning that alleged last-minute changes could burden citizens and undermine transparency.
Atiku accused the government of pushing fiscal policies without broad consultation, insisting that any reforms affecting taxation must reflect equity and protect vulnerable Nigerians. Obi, on his part, questioned the credibility of the legislative process, calling for clarity on provisions he said may discourage investment and worsen economic hardship.
In response, presidential aides dismissed the claims as âmisleading and politically motivated,â insisting that the tax reforms were developed through due process, stakeholder engagement, and in line with global best practices. The Presidency maintained that the bills aim to widen the tax net, boost revenue, and reduce reliance on borrowing without imposing excessive burdens on low-income earners.
As debate intensifies, lawmakers are expected to scrutinize the bills further, while civil society groups call for full disclosure and public hearings to restore confidence in the proposed reforms.
