Kebbi Governor Demands Answers After Military Withdrawal Ahead of Schoolgirls’ Abduction

The governor of Kebbi State, Nasir Idris, has publicly challenged the withdrawal of military personnel from the campus of Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga in Maga town — just 45 minutes before armed bandits abducted 25 schoolgirls in the early hours of the morning.

Idris explained that state authorities had received credible advance intelligence of an impending attack and convened a security council meeting, during which the military assured deployment to the school.
Despite this, the governor says the military withdrew its personnel around 3 a.m., and by approximately 3:45 a.m., the raid occurred. He demanded to know: “Who authorised the military to withdraw?”

While the state and federal governments are coordinating efforts to secure the safe release of the girls, Idris has called for a full investigation into the apparent security lapse. Civil society groups, including the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Nigeria Union of Teachers, have expressed concern over the incident, warning that security must not be politicised.

The incident has reignited fears about the vulnerability of schools in north-western Nigeria, and has added pressure on the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies to enhance protection of educational institutions in regions at high risk of bandit attacks.
