Ribadu meets US Defence Secretary over Christian-genocide allegations

Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, led a high-level delegation to the United States where he held a meeting with Pete Hegseth, the U.S. Defence Secretary (self-styled “Secretary of War”).

The closed-door talks at the United States Department of Defense (Pentagon) follow mounting pressure from Washington over Nigeria’s religious-freedom record, especially allegations of mass attacks on Christian communities.

During the meeting, Hegseth informed Ribadu that under the leadership of Donald Trump the U.S. “Department of War is working aggressively with Nigeria to end the persecution of Christians by jihadist terrorists.” He also asked the Nigerian government to undertake “urgent and enduring action to stop violence against Christians.”

Ribadu’s delegation included senior Nigerian officials: the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Bianca Ojukwu, Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, Attorney-General Lateef Fagbemi, Chief of Defence Staff Olufemi Oluyede, and other top security and foreign-affairs officials.
