FCT Police Dismiss Claims of Assassination Attempt on Naval Officer Yerima

The FCT Police Command has categorically denied reports that Lt. Ahmed Yerima of the Nigerian Navy was targeted in an assassination attempt in Abuja. According to the command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, no such incident was reported or recorded within the Federal Capital Territory.

The alleged incident had made the rounds on social media, with some outlets claiming that Mr. Yerima was trailed on Sunday evening by armed men in two unmarked Hilux vans from the NIPCO Filling Station off the Kubwa Expressway to Gado-Nasco Way.

In its statement, the FCT Police said the storyline was “false and unverified,” and urged the public to desist from spreading such unverified claims that could cause unnecessary panic.

The command further clarified that on 16 November 2025 at about 6:15 p.m., a routine patrol stopped an ash-coloured Toyota Camry with fully tinted windows and a concealed plate at the NNPC Junction along Kubwa Expressway. The driver declined to identify himself. He was later identified by three naval personnel and allowed to proceed. The police say this encounter has been misrepresented as an “assassination attempt.”

Analysts note the timing of the viral claims is significant: the officer in question had been involved in a heated altercation with Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, over a disputed land site in Abuja. The face-off had already triggered public and media interest.

The police emphasised that residents should remain vigilant, report suspicious activity rather than rely on unverified social-media narratives, and cooperate with law-enforcement agencies in carrying out legitimate duties.
