Amnesty International: Over 1,800 Killed in Southeast Nigeria in Two Years — Monarch Raises Alarm

A traditional ruler in Nigeria’s Southeast region has decried the escalating violence that has claimed more than 1,800 lives in the last two years, according to a report by Amnesty International. The report highlighted widespread killings, abductions, and destruction linked to separatist activities and government counter-operations.

Speaking on the report, the monarch urged the federal and state governments to act decisively, stressing that insecurity has crippled businesses, displaced thousands, and left communities in fear. Amnesty International’s data revealed that most victims were civilians caught between armed groups and security forces.

The rights group also accused both state and non-state actors of human rights violations, including extrajudicial killings and unlawful detentions. Local leaders called for peace talks, rehabilitation, and justice for victims to end the cycle of violence plaguing the region.
