Cameroon’s President Paul Biya Sworn in for Historic Eighth Term Amid Post-Election Tensions

YAOUNDÉ – Cameroon’s 92-year-old President Paul Biya has been officially sworn in for an unprecedented eighth term in office, pledging to restore stability following weeks of unrest after a disputed election.

In his inaugural address at the parliament in YaoundĂ©, Biya, the world’s oldest serving head of state, promised to stabilise the country and criticised “irresponsible politicians” for inciting violence. “I can assure you, order will reign,” he said, warning against plunging the nation into crisis.

The post-election violence has claimed at least 14 lives, while more than 1,200 people have been arrested, according to the National Human Rights Commission. Other organisations have reported higher casualty figures.

Biya, who first came to power in 1982, officially secured 54 percent of the vote, defeating opposition candidate Issa Tchiroma Bakary, who received 35 percent. Tchiroma Bakary rejected the results, claiming he was the rightful winner and accusing authorities of electoral fraud—a claim the government denies.

Despite the controversy, Biya described the election as “satisfactory” and commended the country’s electoral body, Elecam, for its conduct. He also praised security forces for managing protests but did not directly address concerns about excessive use of force.
