Power Showdown: Wike Bloc Defiant as PDP BoT Insists on Holding Convention
A major power tussle is unfolding within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the Board of Trustees (BoT) insists that the long-awaited national convention must proceed despite opposition from the bloc loyal to Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike. The BoT, in a statement after an emergency meeting in Abuja, emphasized that the party cannot continue to operate without a clear leadership direction and must elect new national officers to stabilize its structure ahead of the 2027 elections.
However, sources within the party disclosed that the Wike camp remains defiant, insisting that the current leadership under Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum should remain in place until pending court cases are resolved. The group reportedly accused the BoT of bias and of working in favour of former Vice President Atiku Abubakarâs faction.
Party elders have begun mediation efforts to prevent another major split, warning that the ongoing crisis could weaken the PDPâs opposition strength ahead of the 2027 polls. Meanwhile, several state chapters have called for unity and reconciliation to preserve the partyâs legacy as Nigeriaâs foremost opposition force.
