Trump Places Nigeria on Watch List Over Claims of Anti-Christian Violence

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has reportedly placed Nigeria on a special watch list over what he described as “persistent and alarming” cases of violence against Christians. Trump, in a statement released through his campaign office, expressed deep concern about growing insecurity and alleged religious persecution in parts of Nigeria.

He accused the Nigerian government of failing to protect minority Christian communities from attacks by insurgents, bandits, and extremist groups. Trump’s remarks came after several international Christian organisations petitioned the U.S. government to take action, citing massacres in Plateau, Benue, and Kaduna States.

According to Trump, his administration had previously taken measures to pressure foreign governments accused of religious intolerance, and he vowed to reinstate similar policies if re-elected. The statement has generated mixed reactions, with the Nigerian government dismissing the allegations as “politically motivated” and not reflective of the country’s religious diversity.

The Presidency noted that Nigeria’s constitution guarantees freedom of religion and accused foreign actors of attempting to destabilise the country through misinformation. Meanwhile, Christian advocacy groups have welcomed Trump’s position, urging global attention to what they term “an unfolding humanitarian crisis.”

Security experts warn that the renewed international spotlight could affect Nigeria’s diplomatic relations with Washington and impact future defence cooperation or aid agreements.
