Coup Controversy: Military Tracks N45bn in NDDC Accounts

Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters has intensified investigations into an alleged ₩45 billion suspicious transaction traced to the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), following intelligence reports linking the diverted funds to suspected financing of coup-related activities.

Sources within the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) revealed that a covert audit uncovered irregular financial flows from NDDC project accounts to private firms believed to have military connections. The funds, according to investigators, were allegedly moved under the guise of emergency infrastructural projects in the Niger Delta region.

A senior military officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that several serving and retired officers are under discreet surveillance. “We have uncovered multiple accounts through which public funds were siphoned. The goal is to determine whether any portion was channelled toward subversive activities,” the officer stated.

The NDDC management has denied any wrongdoing, insisting that all its financial dealings are transparent and duly approved by relevant oversight agencies. The Commission’s spokesperson described the allegations as “baseless and politically motivated,” adding that internal audits are underway to verify the claims.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has directed security agencies to strengthen financial intelligence monitoring, particularly in strategic institutions handling capital projects. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) are collaborating on the probe.

Political analysts say the development underscores renewed tension in the security architecture following recent rumours of a failed coup attempt. The outcome of the ongoing investigation could have far-reaching implications for both the NDDC leadership and the military hierarchy.
