Senate Set to Grill New Service Chiefs Today over Security, Defence Strategy

The Nigerian Senate will today subject the newly appointed service chiefs to a rigorous screening session at the National Assembly, Abuja. The exercise aims to assess their preparedness to tackle the country’s worsening insecurity and reform the armed forces for efficiency.

Sources within the Senate Committee on Defence confirmed that the chiefs will present their strategic blueprints on counter-insurgency, banditry, oil theft, and cyber warfare. The screening is expected to be comprehensive, covering issues of military welfare, accountability in defence spending, and civil-military relations.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio had earlier pledged that the screening would not be a mere formality, emphasising the lawmakers’ commitment to national security. The service chiefs, appointed by President Bola Tinubu, are also expected to respond to public concerns over human rights compliance and inter-agency coordination.

Analysts say the outcome of today’s session will shape public confidence in the new military leadership and signal the Senate’s resolve to ensure transparency and results in Nigeria’s defence system.
