Why Sowore Was Taken to Prison After Bail – Police

The Nigeria Police Force has clarified why activist and presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, was taken to prison despite being granted bail by the court. According to the police spokesperson, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, Sowore’s transfer to the Kuje Correctional Centre was a procedural step pending the fulfilment of his bail conditions, not a punitive measure.

Adejobi explained that once bail is granted, a suspect remains in custody until all bail terms are met and verified by the appropriate authorities. He stated that the correctional facility serves as the lawful place of custody during this verification process.

“The police do not have the authority to release an accused person until the court confirms that all bail requirements have been fulfilled. Mr. Sowore’s case follows the same legal process applicable to all citizens,” Adejobi said.

He also dismissed claims that the police acted in defiance of the court’s order, describing them as “misleading and sensational.” Sowore, the leader of the #RevolutionNow movement, was reportedly taken into custody following allegations of unlawful assembly and incitement but was granted bail by the Federal High Court, Abuja.

Public interest groups have, however, called for closer monitoring of law enforcement compliance with judicial directives to prevent the abuse of citizens’ rights.
