FreeNnamdiKanu: Protesters Defy Security Warnings, Vow to March to Aso Villa
Supporters of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, on Monday took to the streets in major Nigerian cities despite stern warnings from security agencies. The protesters, waving Biafran flags and chanting solidarity songs, demanded Kanuâs immediate and unconditional release from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
The demonstrators, who gathered in Abuja, Enugu, and Onitsha, accused the federal government of violating Kanuâs human rights and disobeying court orders that granted him bail. Despite heavy police presence, the protesters vowed to continue their peaceful march until their demands are met, even pledging to move their protest to Aso Villa in Abuja if the government remains silent.
Security operatives had earlier issued warnings, cautioning against any form of public demonstration around sensitive government zones. However, IPOB sympathizers insisted they would not be intimidated, emphasizing that their movement remains non-violent and focused on justice for Kanu.
The protest caused mild traffic disruption in parts of Abuja, with security forces maintaining barricades near the federal secretariat. Meanwhile, human rights groups have urged the government to open dialogue with the agitators instead of resorting to suppression.
Nnamdi Kanu has been in DSS custody since 2021 following his extradition from Kenya. His legal team continues to press for his release, citing health concerns and prolonged detention without trial.
