Lima, Peru — Peru has once again plunged into political turmoil after its Congress voted unanimously to remove President Dina Boluarte from office on grounds of “moral incapacity.” In a dramatic turn of events, lawmakers swiftly swore in Congress leader Jose Jeri as the new president — making him the seventh person to lead Peru since 2016.

The decision came just after midnight on Friday, following hours of intense debate and multiple impeachment motions from opposition blocs. Boluarte, widely regarded as one of the world’s least popular leaders, had faced plummeting approval ratings — hovering between 2% and 4% — amid allegations of corruption and excessive use of force against protesters during her administration.

Shortly after her ouster, the 63-year-old former president addressed the nation from the presidential palace, acknowledging that the same Congress which placed her in power in December 2022 had now voted to remove her.

> “At every moment, I called for unity,” Boluarte said, warning that her removal poses serious risks to Peru’s fragile democracy.

Meanwhile, Jose Jeri, 38, a member of the Somos Peru party, took the oath of office draped in the national flag’s sash. In his maiden address to lawmakers, he vowed to confront Peru’s worsening security crisis, which had become a major point of contention under Boluarte’s rule.

“The main enemy is out there on the streets — criminal gangs,” Jeri declared. “We must declare war on crime.”

As news of Boluarte’s removal spread, crowds gathered outside the Congress building and the Ecuadorean embassy, where speculation swirled that the former leader might seek asylum. Celebrations erupted across parts of Lima, with citizens waving flags, dancing, and playing music in the streets.

Boluarte’s downfall caps months of escalating political friction, accusations of misconduct, and public outrage. Her failure to appear before Congress on Thursday night — after being summoned to defend herself — sealed her fate, paving the way for an impeachment vote that marks yet another chapter in Peru’s cycle of instability.
