Strike: SSANU, NASU Extend Ultimatum to Federal Government

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have jointly announced the extension of their ultimatum to the Federal Government over unresolved labour issues.

The unions, operating under the Joint Action Committee (JAC), said the extension became necessary to give the government more time to address their demands, which include payment of withheld salaries, improved welfare packages, and implementation of agreements reached in previous negotiations.

In a statement signed by their leaders, the unions accused the government of neglecting the plight of non-teaching university workers while prioritising only the academic sector. They stressed that the continuous delay in addressing their grievances has worsened the hardship faced by their members across institutions.

SSANU National President, Mohammed Ibrahim, and NASU General Secretary, Peters Adeyemi, warned that the unions would have no option but to embark on a nationwide strike should the government fail to act within the new grace period.

They further criticised what they described as the government’s “selective treatment” of university staff, pointing out that non-academic workers play critical roles in keeping Nigeria’s higher institutions running.

The unions had earlier issued a 14-day ultimatum, which expired last week without any substantial response from the authorities. The extension, according to them, is the “last opportunity” for the government to avert a total shutdown of universities.

Students and parents have expressed growing concerns about the looming strike, with many fearing another round of disruptions in the academic calendar.

Meanwhile, education stakeholders have urged the Federal Government and the unions to return to the negotiation table to prevent further instability in the nation’s university system.
