Ebola Outbreak Declared in DRC’s Kasai Province
Health authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have declared a new outbreak of Ebola virus disease in Kasai Province, with 28 suspected cases and 15 deaths — including four health workers — recorded as of September 4, 2025.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the outbreak has hit Bulape and Mweka health zones, where patients presented with fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, and haemorrhage. Samples tested at the National Institute of Biomedical Research in Kinshasa confirmed Ebola Zaire as the cause.
WHO and national rapid response teams have been deployed to the affected areas to strengthen surveillance, treatment, and infection control. Two tonnes of protective and medical supplies are being delivered, although access remains difficult. The DRC also has 2,000 doses of the Ervebo Ebola vaccine ready for frontline workers and contacts.
This is the country’s 16th Ebola outbreak since 1976. The last, in Equateur Province in 2022, was contained in three months. Officials warn case numbers may rise as transmission continues, but efforts are underway to quickly contain the spread.
