Malaria affects millions of people in Nigeria every year. This serious disease is spread by the bite of the female Anopheles mosquito.

Symptoms – How to Recognize It?
Symptoms usually appear 7–14 days after a mosquito bite:
- High, fluctuating fever
- Chills and heavy sweating
- Headache
- Nausea, vomiting
- Muscle pain and weakness
- Yellowing of skin and eyes (jaundice)
- In severe cases: confusion or fainting

How to Protect Yourself (Locals & Tourists):
- Sleep under a mosquito net
- Use insect repellent
- Eliminate standing water around your home

Common preventive medications include:
- Malarone (atovaquone/proguanil): 1 tablet daily, start 1–2 days before travel, continue during the trip, and for 7 days after returning.
- Doxycycline: 1 tablet daily, start 1–2 days before travel, continue during the trip, and for 4 weeks after returning.
- Lariam (mefloquine): 1 tablet weekly, begin at least 2 weeks before travel, continue during the trip, and for 4 weeks after.

Important: Always consult a doctor – some drugs may have side effects or may not be suitable for everyone.
