World Malaria Day 2026: FG Backs Youth-Led GHC Competition to Eradicate Disease

As Nigeria joined the rest of the world to mark World Malaria Day 2026, the Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to eliminating malaria by endorsing a nationwide youth-focused initiative—the Geneith Health Competition (GHC).

The endorsement, granted through the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, positions the competition as a key strategy in Nigeria’s broader malaria control efforts. The initiative will be implemented across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, with a strong emphasis on mobilising young people as drivers of change in their communities.

Speaking through public health officials, the government described the programme as a strategic intervention aimed at strengthening awareness, prevention, and community engagement in the fight against malaria. Authorities also signaled readiness to integrate the initiative into national health frameworks to accelerate progress toward eradication.

The GHC, developed in collaboration with private sector partners, is designed to empower students in secondary and tertiary institutions to champion malaria advocacy, research, and behavioural change campaigns. Organisers say the competition will nurture a new generation of “malaria ambassadors” capable of influencing grassroots action and improving health literacy nationwide.

Stakeholders highlighted the urgency of intensified action, noting that Nigeria accounts for a significant proportion of global malaria cases and deaths. This burden underscores the need for innovative approaches that involve communities directly—especially the youth—in prevention and control strategies.

The initiative aligns with global calls for renewed commitment, funding, and improved sanitation to curb the spread of malaria, particularly as the country enters peak transmission seasons. Experts stress that sustained investment, environmental hygiene, and proper use of preventive tools such as insecticide-treated nets remain critical to success.

Organisers have opened registration for the 2026 competition, inviting students across Nigeria to participate in developing solutions and awareness campaigns aimed at achieving a malaria-free nation.

With the combined efforts of government, private organisations, and young Nigerians, stakeholders believe the country can make significant strides toward eliminating one of its most persistent public health challenges.
