Unusual Cough, Fever Stir Panic in Lagos as Health Authorities Begin Investigation

Residents of Lagos have expressed growing concern following reports of an unusual cough and fever spreading across several communities. The Lagos State Ministry of Health has confirmed receiving multiple cases of residents exhibiting severe coughing fits, persistent fever, and fatigue.

Health officials have dispatched emergency response teams to investigate the cause of the outbreak amid fears it could be a new viral infection. Hospitals in Ikeja, Surulere, and Ikorodu have reported a sharp rise in patients showing similar symptoms in the past week.

Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, urged residents not to panic but to seek medical attention if symptoms persist. He emphasized that laboratory tests are ongoing to determine whether the illness is related to influenza, COVID-19 variants, or another respiratory infection.

Authorities have advised residents to maintain hygiene, avoid self-medication, and ensure proper ventilation in homes and workplaces. Meanwhile, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has been notified and is collaborating with Lagos health officials to contain the situation.
