NAFDAC Shuts Two Chinese Supermarkets, Eight Shops in FCT Over Regulatory Violations
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sealed off two Chinese-owned supermarkets and eight other retail shops in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for allegedly selling unregistered and expired food products.
NAFDAC officials, during an enforcement operation in Abuja on Saturday, discovered large consignments of imported food items and beverages without proper labeling, registration numbers, or expiry dates. Some of the seized products were said to have been smuggled into the country in violation of food safety regulations.
Dr. Monica Eimunjeze, Acting Director-General of NAFDAC, who confirmed the operation, stated that the move was part of the agency’s intensified crackdown on counterfeit and substandard consumables in the Nigerian market. She warned that selling unregistered products poses serious health risks to unsuspecting consumers.
“NAFDAC will not allow any business—foreign or local—to jeopardize the health of Nigerians through the circulation of unsafe food and drugs. Offenders will face sanctions, including possible prosecution,” she said.
Residents in the affected areas commended the operation, urging the agency to extend its surveillance to other parts of the FCT and neighboring states where similar outlets operate.
The sealed premises are expected to remain under lock and key pending further investigations, while owners may be charged for breaching food safety laws.
