Nigeria TV Info Dangote Increases Nigerian Crude Purchases as Foreign Demand Weakens
The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has significantly increased its intake of Nigerian crude oil, taking advantage of weakening demand from overseas buyers and reshaping the country's oil export dynamics. The development comes as international refiners and traders scale back purchases of West African crude grades amid changing market conditions and increased global supply competition.
Industry reports indicate that the 650,000-barrel-per-day refinery has become one of the largest consumers of Nigerian crude, with the facility ramping up processing levels to over 700,000 barrels per day during recent performance tests. The increased local demand has helped absorb crude volumes that would ordinarily be shipped to Europe, Asia, and other international markets.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) has also increased crude allocations to the refinery in recent months, supplying more cargoes to support domestic refining operations. Analysts say the shift is gradually reducing Nigeria's dependence on imported petroleum products while strengthening the country's refining capacity and improving value addition within the local economy.
Energy experts believe the refinery's growing appetite for local crude could stabilize demand for Nigerian oil grades at a time when overseas buyers are becoming more selective. The development may also boost government revenues, conserve foreign exchange, and position Nigeria as a major exporter of refined petroleum products across Africa.
However, industry observers note that sustaining the refinery's crude requirements will require increased domestic production and continued cooperation between oil producers and the refinery to ensure adequate feedstock supply.
