No Drop in Petrol Price Despite Dangote’s N699/Litre Slash
Despite Dangote Refinery’s announcement of a reduction in its ex-depot petrol price to N699 per litre, pump prices across Nigeria have remained largely unchanged. Motorists in major cities, including Lagos and Abuja, continue to pay between N855 and N900 per litre, sparking public concern.
Industry operators say the lack of immediate price adjustment is linked to existing stock purchased at higher rates, transportation costs, exchange rate pressures, and margins added by marketers. Some independent marketers also cited delayed distribution logistics and uncertainty over sustained pricing from the refinery.
Regulatory authorities have urged marketers to reflect cost reductions where applicable, while consumer groups are calling for stronger oversight to ensure Nigerians benefit from local refining. Observers note that until old inventories are exhausted and distribution stabilises, the impact of Dangote’s price cut may take time to reach filling stations.
