Stakeholders Chart Path Towards Building Thriving Care Economy in Nigeria

Stakeholders from government, private sector, and civil society have called for strategic investments and policy reforms to develop a robust care economy in Nigeria. Speaking at a national dialogue held in Abuja, participants highlighted that the care sector — encompassing childcare, eldercare, healthcare, and domestic work — remains a critical driver of employment and gender inclusion.

The dialogue, convened by the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs in collaboration with international development partners, emphasised the need for structured frameworks to professionalise care work and provide decent wages and social protection for caregivers.

Experts noted that with Nigeria’s rapidly growing population and urbanisation, a formalised care economy could generate millions of jobs, especially for women, while improving family wellbeing and economic productivity.

Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, stressed that the federal government is committed to creating enabling policies and partnerships to strengthen care infrastructure. Representatives from the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and UN Women also advocated for integrating care policies into Nigeria’s national development plan, citing successful models from other developing nations.

The meeting concluded with a resolution to establish a multi-sectoral task force to design a national framework for care economy development in 2026.
