Crude Row Deepens as Nigerian Refiners Reject 11 Million-Barrel Local Supply
Nigeria’s ongoing oil sector crisis has worsened as domestic refiners have reportedly rejected over 11 million barrels of crude oil supplied by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL). The refiners, including modular and privately-owned plants, cited quality inconsistencies, pricing disputes, and logistics bottlenecks as key reasons for the rejection.
According to industry insiders, the standoff could jeopardize the Federal Government’s plan to boost local refining capacity and reduce dependence on imported petroleum products. The NNPCL had earlier earmarked the crude for use by local refineries, including the Dangote Refinery, in an effort to strengthen the Crude Oil Domestic Supply Obligation (CODSO) initiative.
However, sources revealed that the refiners raised concerns over high pricing compared to international market rates and delivery challenges linked to pipeline vandalism and inadequate transport infrastructure. The development has prompted fears of further delays in Nigeria’s refining recovery efforts and may impact fuel availability in the coming weeks.
Government officials are expected to meet refinery operators this week to address the impasse and renegotiate terms that could stabilize domestic crude supply and protect the country’s energy security.
