Ending Fuel Subsidy Was Tough but Necessary — Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reiterated that the removal of fuel subsidy was a tough but unavoidable decision to rescue Nigeria’s economy from collapse. Speaking on Tuesday during an event marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary, Tinubu said the subsidy regime had become unsustainable and only benefitted a few at the expense of the masses.

According to him, the decision was made in the best interest of the nation, despite the immediate economic hardship it caused. He assured Nigerians that the government is committed to cushioning the effects through social welfare programs, investments in infrastructure, and policies aimed at boosting food security and job creation.

Tinubu noted that while the initial pains of subsidy removal are being felt, the long-term gains will put Nigeria on a path of sustainable growth. He urged citizens to remain patient and hopeful, stressing that reforms are necessary to secure the country’s future.
