Dangote fumes at union’s order to ground refinery

Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man and owner of the $20bn Dangote Refinery, has expressed anger over threats by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) to shut down operations at the facility. The union had issued a 7-day ultimatum, demanding the reinstatement of workers allegedly sacked without due process and improved welfare conditions.

Reacting on Saturday, Dangote described the union’s directive as “irresponsible and dangerous to Nigeria’s economic stability,” warning that grounding the refinery—Nigeria’s biggest hope for ending fuel importation—could trigger fuel shortages and worsen the already fragile economy.

He insisted that management followed due process in its employment and disciplinary measures, adding that no amount of intimidation would derail the refinery’s long-term vision.

Industry analysts warn that a shutdown could destabilize the nation’s energy market, disrupt supply chains, and cause fresh scarcity of petroleum products.

Meanwhile, the federal government is reportedly monitoring the standoff, with labour and petroleum ministries expected to intervene in the coming days.
