Nigeria TV Info – Traditional Rulers Clarify Demand for Constitutional Recognition, Say Role is Complementary

Abuja, Nigeria – Traditional rulers under the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria (NCTRN) have clarified that their demand for constitutional recognition is not intended to usurp the powers of political leaders but to support them in achieving good governance.

Speaking at the National Public Hearing on Constitution Review organised by the House of Representatives, the Etsu Nupe and Chairman of the Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, emphasized that the role of monarchs remains complementary to that of elected leaders.

He noted that although traditional rulers were excluded from the 1999 Constitution for reasons never explained, they have consistently played vital roles in assisting government with policy implementation, community mobilization, and conflict resolution.

Alhaji Abubakar added that constitutional recognition would further strengthen their contributions to national development and ensure closer collaboration with political leaders at all levels.
