Tragedy in Sokoto: Six Confirmed Dead in Garin-Faji Boat Mishap

A pall of grief has enveloped Garin-Faji Village in Sabon-Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State following a tragic boat mishap that claimed the lives of six persons in the early hours of Friday, August 22, 2025.

Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred while residents were crossing a local river in the area. The ill-fated boat, which was reportedly overloaded, capsized midway, throwing passengers into the water.

Local divers and villagers were able to rescue some survivors, but six persons were confirmed dead at the scene. Authorities have since commenced search efforts to ensure no victims remain unaccounted for.

Community leaders described the incident as a devastating loss, urging government intervention to improve water transport safety in rural areas.

The Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) is expected to issue an official statement on the tragedy.
