Deadly Crane Collapse in Thailand Kills 22, Injures Dozens on Passenger Train
Bangkok — At least 22 people have been killed and more than 80 injured after a construction crane collapsed onto a moving passenger train in Thailand, authorities confirmed on Tuesday, marking one of the country’s deadliest rail accidents in recent years.
The crash occurred around 09:00 local time when the crane fell directly onto a carriage of a train travelling from Bangkok to a northeastern province. Official records indicate the train was carrying at least 195 passengers at the time. Among the injured is a one-year-old child, while survivors describe passengers being thrown into the air as the crane struck the carriage.
The Governor of the State Railway of Thailand has ordered a “thorough and comprehensive” investigation into the cause of the collapse. Construction accidents are relatively common in Thailand, often attributed to weak enforcement of safety standards.
In the wake of the tragedy, the State Railway of Thailand has canceled two train services and diverted 12 others. Affected passengers are being offered full refunds.
China, which is involved in a Thailand–China railway project linked to the accident, said it is verifying the details of the incident. Beijing emphasized that the section of the railway where the accident occurred is being built by a Thai company and highlighted the importance of strict safety measures.
The investigation is ongoing, with authorities pledging accountability and improved safety measures for ongoing construction projects.
